Q-Switch lasers deliver energy to the skin in nanoseconds — billionths of a second. The power released in such a short pulse breaks unwanted pigment (sun spots, melasma, birthmarks or tattoo ink) mechanically, without heating the healthy tissue around it. The shattered pigment is then small enough for immune cells to carry away, and it leaves the body through the lymphatic system over the following weeks. The Helios III we use at our Antalya clinic works across four wavelengths, so one device can address pale brown freckles near the surface and deep blue-black tattoo ink with the right energy for each. Its most common uses are sun and age spots, melasma, tattoo and permanent make-up removal, and carbon peeling, which brightens the skin in a single session. In a city like Antalya, where the sun is strong all year, timing is part of the treatment: pigment lasers are both more effective and safer in autumn and winter, when the skin has been away from the sun. The Q-Switch effect is photoacoustic rather than thermal — the result comes from a very short pressure wave that fractures pigment, not from heating tissue. Keeping heat damage to a minimum markedly lowers the risk of burns and scarring, and most patients return to normal life the same day. Superficial sun spots may clear in a few sessions, while multi-coloured professional tattoos need a longer programme, with 4-6 weeks between sessions so the skin can clear the pigment. Hormonal pigmentation such as melasma calls for especially careful energy settings.
